Fire Fighter Recruit Employment Process
 
 


The Mission Fire/Rescue Service is operated under the direction of the District of Mission and consists of a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief Prevention Training, Captain Fire Prevention Officer, Lieutenant Fire Inspector, Administrative Clerk and approximately 80 Paid Call Fire Fighters. 

Currently the Mission Fire/Rescue Service has three operating fire stations and they are located in the following areas

General Employment Requirements

  • You must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Live within the District of Mission, and within the Fire Station’s first response area to which you apply.
  • Have a valid B.C. Driver’s Licence, and adequate transportation.
  • Be physically fit to perform fire fighting duties.

All Mission Fire/Rescue Service Fire Fighters are required to attend training sessions which are scheduled on the first, second, fourth and fifth Tuesdays of each month from 7:00  p.m.  - 9:00 pm.  A minimum of 60% attendance at training is mandatory.

Members are expected to also attend a minimum of 20% of incident calls for their respective fire stations.
 
Salary and benefits will be as per the District of Mission Policy Manual.

Members must complete the British Columbia Fire Fighter Standard  Curriculum within four years of being accepted to the Mission FireRescue Service.

Selection Process

  • Each applicant must make application to the Fire/Rescue Service on the appropriate application form.
  • In September of each year, all applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee of members of the Fire/Rescue Service.
  • Depending on the positions available from each fire station, applicants may be invited to write an entry exam.
  • A short list will be developed based on the application detail and end results of the written exam.
  • A criminal records check shall be performed through the RCMP based on the written consent from the applicant.
  • Those short listed will be interviewed.
  • Those selected will be required to provide a physician’s note stating they are fit to perform fire fighting duties, prior to commencing recruit training

Recruit Training

The recruit training program is four months in duration, commencing in October or November of each year at Fire Station No. 1 for candidates for all three fire stations.  The training period consists of:

  • One night per week of three hours training.
  • One Saturday or Sunday per month for fire fighter training.
  • Two weekends for Emergency Medical Assistant First Responder Level III training.
  • One day for cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.
  • Two written exams.
  • Evaluations by instructors.

Recruits must maintain an attendance level of 70% during the recruit training program.

Recruit Fire Fighters will be on probation for a one year period. During this time, they are evaluated by their company officers.
