10 Ways you can help responders help you!
- Clearly Post your address! It helps responders to be able to find you when you need them!
- Post important information on your fridge! Include the care card numbers for your family.
- ICE your Cell phones! This helps responders to be able to notify the right person. ICE (in case of emergency).
- Know the Non-Emergency phone number for the police. You can always call this number if you believe that something is “not quite right”.
- Have key contacts/numbers listed in your wallet. It is common for people to forget numbers and names when under stress.
- Create your Family Emergency Plan.
- Don’t leave your Pets – they’re family too! While pets are not allowed inside reception centres, our plans do take your pets into consideration and they will not be turned away!
- Know when and how to turn off the gas to your home! While anyone can turn off the gas, a qualified technician must turn it on again. So don’t turn it off unless necessary.
- How to communicate when there are disruptions to phone service. Following major emergencies, local information that you will need will be broadcasted on FM 92.5. If you still have internet access check the District of Mission website at www.mission.ca for current information.
- Post your Help/OK sign to communicate with responders and neighbours. These signs should be displayed in an area that is visible from the road. In times of no telephone service they can assist you in getting the help you need!
- BONUS! Make the effort to meet your neighbours. Your neighbours will likely be your next contact after an emergency has occurred.
