Mission Soapbox Community Garden
The History of the Soapbox Garden: The District of Mission has provided the land for the garden for $1.00/ year since 1993. In that year the Mission Environmental Society founded the Mission Soapbox Community Organic Garden. Since its inception, the garden has been operating by numerous volunteers. It has impacted many of Mission’s citizens throughout the years, providing groups, families and individuals an opportunity for hands on participation in community gardening. The Soapbox Garden is fully fenced and centrally located, NW of the Leisure Center property, just above the Mission Skate park, and adjacent to the historic Soapbox Derby race track (1954‐1974). The garden can be reached via the Leisure Centre parking lot or off Tailbut Street on the other side of the Mission Seniors Centre (the old Play Station).
Management of the Soapbox Garden: L.I.N.C. took over the management of the Mission Soapbox Community Organic Garden. We signed the agreement with the District of Mission in January 2010. The agreement is for one year with the option to renew for two more years. Along with managing the garden, providing maintenance of the garden’s communal areas, L.I.N.C. will be donating a portion of the vegetables grown in its plots to the local food bank and food centre. L.I.N.C. has a subcommittee for the garden made up of members of the Mission Food Advisory Network (MFAN) that advises and works with the L.I.N.C. executive director on the community garden. (L.I.N.C., itself, has been a member of MFAN since May 2009.)
