Earth Day Compost Giveaway a Success

With spring temperatures on the rise for the first time this year, a total of 166 Mission residents rose to the occasion and picked up their free cubic yard of Rot Pot compost at the Mission Landfill on Earth Day (April 22nd). The compost was made from food and yard waste collected at Mission’s curbsides and ground greenwaste at the landfill. The final product was screened and will make for a useful soil amendment in any garden or yard. Making compost out of food waste is a great way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, make use of natural nutrients and keep a valuable resource out of the landfill.  Thank you to all Mission residents who keep using their Rot Pots to contribute their food and yard waste to this worthwhile cause.

If you’ve missed this year’s event, you can purchase Rot Pot compost at  Global Landscaping Supplies at 7085 Bridge Street. Larger quantities (upwards of 15 cubic yards) of Rot Pot compost can alse be purchased directly from the processor, Transform Compost Systems. Please note that this compost is a soil conditioner, not a potting soil, and has to be mixed with soil or sand before use. Please contact either supplier directly for pricing and pickup/delivery options.

Rot Pots are for Food Waste

Thank you for participation in Mission’s curbside food waste program. You are part of the vast majority of Mission residents who have now embraced the idea of food waste diversion and are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To keep this project on track, please do not include any liquids in your Rot Pot, as they make servicing difficult and will leak out of the collection vehicle.

If you have not received your Rot Pot, please call the Engineering Department at 604-820-3736. Please note that only single-family homes, duplexes and registered secondary suites are eligible for a Rot Pot. See the District’s press release for additional information.

Noteworthy Facts

Food waste has been collected separately at the curbside in Mission for over ten years. All Rot Pot food is collected by the same truck that collects yard waste. Unused space in the Rot Pot can be utilized by adding yard waste, provided that the entire container does not exceed 20 kg in weight.

All food and yard waste collected at the curb is delivered to the Mission Landfill, where it is composted by a private company. Previous to the introduction of the Rot Pots, food and yard waste was delivered to a private processor at the southwest end of Abbotsford. Shipping food and yard waste to the Mission Landfill makes for more efficient transportation and saves on vehicle emissions.

Most of the finished compost is sold to various users by the private processor, but free compost will be made available to residents on special occasions. The first compost give-away event is scheduled for April 22nd, 2012, to mark Earth Day.

Rot Pot – Six-Month Update

A huge thank you to all you dedicated residents who have embraced using the Rot Pot and who continue to separate their kitchen waste, and congratulations on making a big difference in the amount of organic waste going to the landfill! Using the Rot Pot for kitchen waste is the most important decision that any resident can make to benefit the environment. Keeping organic materials out of the landfill reduces greenhouse gas emissions and will extend the life of the landfill by about ten years. The graph on the right shows how much less garbage was landfilled and how much more food and yard waste was diverted since the introduction of the Rot Pot in June of 2011 compared to last year.

Food Waste Composting at the Landfill – Update

Food waste collected at the curb is now being delivered to the Mission Landfill for processing into useable compost material. For an update on this new initiative at the landfill, please read the processor’s information flyer.

Hot Rot

Composting food waste in a professional setting achieves temperatures of up to 80 degrees Celsius (192 F). Temperatures in this range speed up the composting process and destroy disease-causing organisms, such as bacteria and viruses, which is why materials such as meat, cheese and bones can be included, when they wouldn’t be suitable for your backyard composter. Some people even find other uses for the Rot Pot hot rot…
