Main Cleaning

WATER MAIN CLEANING FOR 2012 IS COMPLETE

Water Main Cleaning Program

Water main cleaning is a key component of maintaining water quality. Annually the District of Mission cleans approximately 20% of the water system mains. Cleaning is achieved by inserting disinfected bullet shaped foam swabs into the water main via a fire hydrant and then allowing the water pressure to push the swabs through the main scrubbing the pipe sidewalls to a fire hydrant at the end of the main where the swabs and the scoured debris are flushed out of the water main.

It is extremely important residents not open their taps during the cleaning times because they can draw into their plumbing debris laden water, which is unsuitable for drinking and will plug your household screens.

The water main cleaning usually occurs in Spring (March/April) or Fall (October/November) each year after any potential for water conservation measures have passed. To reduce the inconvenience caused by the interruption of water service, staff carry out water main cleaning in the late evening and early morning hours (10:00 p.m.- 5:00 a.m.)  The process however will require lighting and will produce some noise during these hours. Every effort will be made to minimize any disturbance to residents.
