Bear-smart Yard and Garden Practices

Pick up fallen fruit promptly and feed your pets indoors. Even bird feeders can attract a hungry bear, so remove them between April and November and stretch piano wire at least 3 metres off the ground to hang them in the winter.

Did you know that the smell of petroleum also attracts bears? Ensure that all rubber, tarpaper, paint, turpentine, kerosene and charcoal fluids are put away and keep barbeques clean.

If you have a backyard composter, add only small amounts of fruit and vegetable scraps at a time and immediately mix them in with the compost. Sprinkling garden lime on compost speeds up the decomposition process and decreases odours. Never put dairy products, bread or meat in your backyard composter.
