Picnic shelter completed at Griner Park

Residents near Griner Park happy to see long awaited picnic shelter completed

The District of Mission is pleased to be opening the long-awaited picnic shelter in Griner Park.

In the 2009 Parks, Trails and Bicycle Master Plan, picnic shelters take up just a small paragraph but for the residents who will use them, they make a world of difference – fresh air but out of the rain. The Griner Park picnic shelter is now a reality, just in time for users to be out of the wet weather.

“The District of Mission is very committed to providing amenities that serve our residents. This shelter, initiated by residents near Griner Park themselves, is a welcome addition to the area.” says Mission Mayor James Atebe. “We are very pleased to be able to complete this project which will allow residents to get out in the fresh air – even as the rainy season is upon us.” The Mayor also noted that attendees will be able to park on freshly paved surface as the parking lot is now complete.

The request for the twenty by twenty foot shelter, which covers four picnic tables, was largely resident driven and was the subject of a resident petition. “Public input into the Master Plan which includes the way we develop our parks, was an important driver in the completion of this project,” said Ray Herman, Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture.
