New Community Kitchens in Mission!

Mission’s Kitchens is launching two new community kitchens in August, just in time to take advantage of the abundance of locally produced food.  Coordinated by the Mission Food Access Network (MFAN), administered by the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley and funded by the United Way, the kitchens will provide an environment where diverse groups of people can learn and share the skills of budgeting, planning, shopping, and preparing nutritious, reasonably priced food from scratch. The kitchens will focus on using local, in-season ingredients and connecting people in the community.

One kitchen will focus on essential food skills such as meal planning, preparing healthy snacks and cooking nutritious dishes on a budget.  It will run on the first and third Wednesday of the month from August until December 2010 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at St. Andrew’s United Church, 7756 Grand St.

Another kitchen will focus on heritage cooking skills such as canning, preserving, and making bread, yogurt, and other `from scratch` foods. It will run on the second and fourth Saturday of the month from September until December 2010 from 1pm to 3pm at All Saints Anglican Church, 33077 Second Avenue. There will be three special canning workshops in the month of August to kick-off this kitchen. See www.mfan.ca for more details and registration forms for the canning workshops.
