Accessibility, Inclusion and Diversity Committee

Mandate

The Accessibility, Inclusion and Diversity Committee (AIDC) is a Council appointed advisory body consisting of both organization and citizen representatives with lived accessibility experiences and diverse perspectives.  The AIDC was formed to meet the obligations of the Accessible British Columbia Act.  This Act aims to identify, remove, and prevent barriers for people with disabilities in B.C. by enabling the development of accessibility standards and introducing new accessibility requirements for government, public libraries, school districts, and other prescribed organizations.

Purpose

The purpose of this committee is to advise Council on accessibility planning, establish a public feedback mechanism for accessibility, inclusion, and diversity, and consider existing City policies and programs through a lens of improved access and appreciation of diversity.

Objectives

  • Develop an organizational accessibility plan and a mechanism for the public to provide feedback on barriers and the accessibility plan.
  • Provide advice and guidance regarding accessibility within City departments, facilities, infrastructure and municipal events, including how the City may become more inclusive in its operations.
  • Identify accessibility, diversity and inclusion barriers that community members experience or may experience in the course of interacting with the City.
  • Investigate funding opportunities available with respect to inclusion, accessibility and diversity.
  • Receive and advise on questions related to diversity, inclusion and accessibility referred by Council.
  • Recommend appropriate actions to Council relating to the above
