Fire Prevention Week October 7 to 13, 2018

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme focuses on three basic but essential actions people can take to be fire-safe: LOOK for potential fire hazards around your home. LISTEN for the smoke alarms in an emergency. LEARN two ways out of every room. Practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in your home before a fire starts so everyone can get out quickly.

Special Council Recognition Award for Casey Wright

Mr. Casey Wright was presented with a Special Council Recognition award for his outstanding fundraising achievements. Casey has dedicated much of his young life to charity work and has been involved with the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, Cops for Cancer Junior Team and Sunshine Dreams for Kids for many years. In 2013 at age 12 Casey was bestowed the rank of Honorary Staff Sergeant Major in the RCMP. He is the only civilian in Canada to hold that honour.

Relocation and Change to Chances Mission

The BC Lottery Corporation has received a request from Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited to relocate Chances Mission from its current site to a new site at Lougheed Highway and Wren Street. Before any consideration by Council to support or oppose the change, the District must complete public and community consultations. Watch the District’s website in the coming months for notification of the public consultation meeting.

New Development Cost Charge Bylaw

The updated Development Cost Charge Bylaw has been adopted. The new rates take effect immediately, however there is protection from the increases for 12 months after the bylaw adoption date for certain development applications that certain criteria. Contact the Engineering Department for further information.

Permissive Tax Exemption Applications

Permissive Tax Exemption Applications were received from seven non-profit organizations for 11 properties that fit the criteria for a one year exemption from municipal taxes in 2019. Once the necessary bylaw is adopted by Council the estimated forgone municipal portion of municipal taxes for all of the properties combined is $62,999. Permissive tax exemptions do not apply to water, sewer and waste collection user fees.
