MISSION, BC—District of Mission playgrounds have re-opened for play following individual safety inspections from Parks staff, and Recreation has set registration dates for physically distanced fitness classes, Club K.I.D.S., and summer camps as the District progresses further into its phased COVID-19 re-opening plan.

“I commend our young residents for their patience as they’ve waited for the day their favourite local playground re-opened. Engaging in play is important for development and I’m happy to see these spaces available again for all to enjoy,” said Mayor Pam Alexis. “Our physically distanced fitness classes, as well as our Club K.I.D.S. and summer camps, are safe ways to re-engage our community with the programs they rely on for leisure and childcare in Mission.”

“As we settle into our new normal, I want to remind everyone to take every effort to remain focused on the COVID-19 precautions outlined by Dr. Bonnie Henry,” she said. “We’ve done a phenomenal job as a community flattening the curve of COVID-19 to get this far and I know this hard work will continue.”

Starting June 9, residents can register for yoga, HIIT & BollyX at a discounted rate, and starting June 16, registration opens for summer camps and Club K.I.D.S.

Within the last few weeks, the District has re-opened sports courts and fields, the skatepark and dog park, as well as the washrooms at Fraser River Heritage Park and Centennial Park. The spray park and artificial turf field remain closed at this time. Municipal Hall partially re-opened on June 1 with property tax payment service available through the north door.

Last month, the District released a survey to the public asking residents to weigh in on how they plan to use both indoor and outdoor recreation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey drew over 1,200 participants and is currently being used to guide Parks, Recreation and Culture staff as they further develop and refine re-opening plans.

When using a facility, please remember to:

  • Practice good hygiene;
  • Stay home and away from others if you are feeling ill;
  • Maintain physical distancing;
  • Consider the use of non-medical masks when physical distancing cannot be maintained.
