MISSION, BC— On May 14, the District of Mission will begin to re-open select outdoor park amenities for public use, while following the guidelines of the Provincial Health Officer and BC’s Restart Plan.

Starting Thursday, sports courts including tennis courts, sports fields with the exception of the artificial turf field are open for casual play and remain closed to sports groups and field bookings, disc golf and the Harbour boat launch will reopen, while the skatepark, playgrounds, outdoor gym equipment and off-leash dog park will continue to remain closed for the time being. The spray park will not be opening following the long weekend as noted in the current Leisure Activity Guide. Future updates will be announced on the District’s website.

“Our plan for re-opening civic facilities and spaces in Mission is aligned with BC’s Restart Plan outlined by Premier John Horgan last week. We will be working safely through each phase of the plan,” said Mayor Pam Alexis. “As we slowly begin to re-open, each of us has to determine our own comfort levels. We are transitioning to a new normal, not going back to normal.”

Municipal buildings, including the Mission Leisure Centre, will remain closed. The District is currently seeking resident input in a survey to understand the feelings and priorities of parks and recreation users at this time. The feedback collected will guide the District’s approach to re-opening more parks and recreation activities through each phase of BC’s Restart Plan. The survey can be taken at

Residents are reminded that while visiting a District of Mission park, it is critical to:

  • Keep a safe physical distance,
  • Practice good hygiene,
  • Stay home if feeling sick, and,
  • When seeing friends and family outside the household, gather in small groups of no more than 2 to 6 people, while maintaining physical distancing.

Failure to follow rules may result in having to close facilities once again.
