Today I want to celebrate all of our 2020 high school graduates, including students from Ecole Mission Senior Secondary, Mission Secondary School, Riverside College and Fraserview Learning Centre.

Mission Graduates: there are 486 of you this year and while your final year didn’t end as you may have expected it to when you started back in September, you persisted and you graduated despite everything going on in the world. Congratulations to all of you. You did it!

The year 2020 will be vivid and alive in our collective memories forever. As a graduate of this historic year, you have seen first hand how quickly life can change and how important it is to adapt to our immediate challenges with kindness and empathy.

As you go forward and carve out a unique future for yourself, you will be doing so with the knowledge and experience of living through the COVID-19 pandemic during your final year of school. You will have this experience to reflect back on as you face the challenges that will come your way later in life, either personally or within our larger society. Cherish this and remember that you’ve lived through change and came out wiser.

We don’t know what the future holds. COVID-19 has just proven this to us. However, you and your classmates have the opportunity now to lead the next generation through our up’s and down’s as no previous generation could have. Your experience in 2020 will help guide you to make the decisions that will shape our bright future and I can’t wait to see the great work you will do. Good luck, everyone.
