Mission, BC—On Monday night, City of Mission Council adopted a new Affordable Housing Strategy to reduce housing gaps, support collaboration with partners, and ensure residents have access to affordable and diverse housing options now and into the future.
The Affordable Housing Strategy represents Mission’s commitment to being an inclusive community where all residents live in safe, appropriate, accessible, and affordable housing and there are housing choices for people of all ages, incomes, and abilities.
The action-oriented, ten-year strategy provides a framework for addressing the housing gaps that were identified in the Housing Needs Assessment in 2020. It also builds on the vision for housing set out in Mission’s Official Community Plan and replaces the City’s first Affordable Housing Strategy adopted in 2010.
In addition to the strategy, Council supported the development of a new City sub-committee that will see representatives of the Mission Sustainable Housing Committee and the Development Liaison Committee brought together to review and assist in implementing the recommendations of the strategy.
“This strategy is ambitious, but it’s clear that it needs to be,” said Mayor Paul Horn. “As our community grows, we must ensure we don’t leave people behind. It’s going to take a collective effort and that’s why Council is grateful to see the way our Development Liaison Committee and our Sustainable Housing Committee partnered in creating a viable strategy.”
The strategy underscores the importance of collaborating with partners in the community and with other levels of government to support the development of affordable housing, something the City is already working toward.
Recently, the City partnered with BC Housing, the Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH), and the Mission Seniors Community Association to construct a mixed-use project made up of 74 units of affordable housing for seniors and the Boswyk Seniors Activity Centre. The City provided the land for the project and a grant.
Access to affordable and diverse housing options helps to ensure Mission can support population growth and economic sustainability, while fostering vibrancy, social cohesion, strong health outcomes, and livability.
