EDSC Eligibility Requirements and Application Form

The District of Mission is currently looking to fill four (4) vacant positions on the Mission Economic Development Select Committee (EDSC) for one and two-year appointments.

The Economic Development Select Committee is a Council appointed advisory body providing recommendations to Council on economic development priorities, policies and matters that will foster and enhance business growth in the community.

Eligible members will be residents, taxpayers, business owners or managers in the District of Mission with the appropriate qualifications, availability, work experience, community involvement and knowledge that can provide independent advice and assistance on the achievement of the EDSC mandate, purpose and goals.

To maintain a balanced composition of the EDSC, the Committee is currently seeking specific knowledge and professional expertise within the following areas:

  • Indigenous perspective expertise: preferably through lived experience as an Indigenous person with practice in relationship development with the District of Mission and/or other levels of governments, Indigenous economic development, understanding of the applicability of Aboriginal title and rights in the economic development context, and the ability to guide relationships that create economic benefits for all parties involved, including Indigenous peoples, from projects both on and off reserve.
  • Significant professional and/or senior leadership experience in one or a combination of the following two areas: business operations, financial management, facilities management, logistics, law, strategic planning, marketing, branding, communications, information technology, government relations, community development.

The EDSC will review all applications and the Committee may choose to undertake interviews. Selections will be made by the Committee and the individuals will be recommended to municipal Council as a Committee member for a one or two-year term. Council has the final determination on all Committee appointments. Appointments to the Committee can be renewed for additional terms.

Meeting Times

Regular EDSC Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month (excluding July and August) from 8:00 am to 9:30 pm at 7337 Welton Street (COVID19 restrictions may temporarily suspend this meeting location and format).

Application Deadline

Applications will be accepted up to 4:30 pm, June 10, 2020.

The Economic Development Select Committee was created in 2002 by the District of Mission. In 2003, the committee was provided with operating funds and delegated as the primary group to oversee economic development activities for the District of Mission.

The committee was tasked primarily with implementing the District of Mission Economic Development Strategy, which included the hiring of an Economic Development Officer. Each committee member is individually appointed by Council for a two year term.

Mandate

The mandate of the Economic Development Select Committee (EDSC) is to provide recommendations to Council on policies, procedures and strategic direction for the purposes of fostering and promoting economic growth within the District of Mission.

 

Guiding Principles

The Economic Development Select Committee is a Council appointed advisory body providing recommendations to Council on economic development priorities, policies and matters that will foster and enhance business growth in the community.
Advice to Council will focus on the following areas:

a. Business retention, expansion and attraction;
b. Industrial land expansion;
c. Competitiveness issues, policy and programs;
d. Marketing and promotional programs and activities;
e. Providing leadership on local business partnership initiatives; and
f. Other issues as requested or assigned by Council.
