Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for another round of heavy rain. The rainfall is expected to begin on Wednesday and last through until early Friday morning with a total rainfall of 40-80 mm. The City of Mission would like to remind the community about Weather Readiness for heavy rain.

How to prepare:

  • Keep your gutters and downspouts clear of leaves and debris
  • Ensure eave troughs are pointed down and away from your home and foundation
  • Make sure the storm drains/catch basins in front of your property are kept clear
  • Test sump pumps
  • Make sure you have an emergency kit
  • Monitor alerts and weather reports for warnings and updates
  • Check-in on your neighbours
  • Store valuables and important items or documents in watertight containers or in high places, like on a tall shelf or upper floor
  • Make sure you have an emergency kit (CLICK HERE FOR RESOURCE)

What to watch for during heavy rain:

  • Avoid small creeks and rivers, as they can fill up quickly and their banks can erode
  • Don’t drive through floodwater. Water may be deeper than it appears and may contain debris, sharp or dangerous objects, potholes or electrical wires
  • Avoid driving in heavy rain due to poor visibility

Please note: at this time only Essential Travel is recommended. With limited route options. unprepared commuters are finding themselves taking detours that can take up to 10 or more hours. If you have to travel, ensure you have a first aid kit, blankets, winter tires and emergency supplies.

For minor water accumulation, call the 24-hour City of Mission Public Works line at 604-820-3761 or email pwadmin@mission.ca during business hours.

For emergencies, due to water/flooding, please call 911.

The City would like to thank Corrections Canada for volunteering to fill sandbags, which are currently available for free in the Benbow area of Hatzic and outside the public works department at 33835 Dewdney Trunk Road.
