Mission, BC—A long-awaited planning process for Mission’s waterfront that will chart the future transformation of this area is slated to begin February 2021.
Details of the 18-month, three-phased Waterfront Revitalization Masterplan project were released today in a request for proposal posted on bids.mission.ca.
“The Waterfront Revitalization Masterplan will advance a vision for the future of the waterfront that will deliver on our community’s priorities, as well as provide certainty for developers looking to invest in this strategically important area,” said Acting Mayor Cal Crawford.
“Over the next year and a half, the Waterfront Revitalization Masterplan team will develop a plan with extensive community engagement that will not only unlock the development potential of this area, but will also address critical questions around how future developments will look and feel, where building will go, and how they’ll be serviced,” he said. “Mission is ready for this. We’re ready for a viable plan that will ensure a sustainable, connected and prosperous waterfront, one that can be enjoyed for generations to come.”
Earlier this year, Council approved an amendment to Mission’s Official Community Plan to include a comprehensive planning area designation for the Waterfront, representing approximately 296 acres of land. The Waterfront Revitalization Masterplan will further develop the vision outlined in the Official Community Plan where the area is defined as a vibrant hub of activities, residences, industry and commerce.
To prepare for masterplanning, the District has undertaken significant technical studies throughout the waterfront to understand more about the constraints. Through this process, it became clear that developing the waterfront presents many technical challenges, such as flood protection, contaminated land, and water and sewer servicing. Once finished, the masterplan will provide the long-range vision for land use, transportation, infrastructure, servicing, flood mitigation, and parks and open spaces to ensure a connected, complete Mission.
