In a small ceremony outside of the Public Works Complex, the City of Mission gathered this morning to remember workers who lost their lives or have been injured on the job, and to reaffirm the City’s commitment to health and safety.
“The purpose of the Day of Mourning is to serve as a reminder to each and every one of us to reaffirm our dedication to enhancing the safety and well-being of our workplaces and preventing more injuries and deaths that are related to work,” said Acting Mayor Ken Herar. “Flags will be flown at half mast across country and a moment of silence will also be held. But there is also a greater purpose that is a commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace.”
Speakers included Human Resources, IAFF, CUPE, and Public Works staff. The ceremony was followed by a moment of silence.
The Day of Mourning takes place every year on April 28.
