FortisBC will conduct low-level helicopter flyovers between September 23 and October 23, 2025, to inspect its high-pressure natural gas transmission lines. These flights are authorized by Transport Canada and will occur during daylight hours. The inspection work was originally planned for May–June 2025 and is now rescheduled.

What residents can expect

  • Short flyovers: Mission is one of several Fraser Valley communities included. Time over any single area will be minimal.
  • No ground activity: All work is conducted from the air—no crews on the ground are associated with these flights.
  • Safety & reliability: FortisBC’s contractor (Talon Helicopters with LaSen Inc.) uses aerial LiDAR detection technology to identify potential issues and help plan maintenance, supporting the safe and reliable operation of the system.
  • Weather dependent: The schedule may shift based on weather or wildfire conditions.

Where

Flights will occur along FortisBC’s transmission pipeline corridor within Mission and neighbouring Fraser Valley communities (Chilliwack, Kent, and Abbotsford). Please see the map above.

Why is this work happening?

This inspection is part of FortisBC’s annual integrity management program to proactively monitor pipeline conditions and maintain public safety.
