Pedestrian safety was boosted this September at five different signalized intersections close to schools, playgrounds and parks, with the installation of new leading pedestrian intervals (LPIs).
These locations include:
- Cedar St & Egglestone Ave
- Cedar St & Cherry Ave
- Cedar St & Best Ave
- 7th Ave & Murray St
- 7th Ave & Stave Lake St
New LPIs are coming soon to a sixth intersection at 7th Ave and Grand St later this fall.
When the crosswalk button is pressed at one of these intersections, the WALK signal will appear a few seconds before vehicles receive a green light. This lead time improves visibility and safety for those on foot.
The project is funded through a road safety grant from BC Vision Zero, with additional funding from the City of Mission.
New overhead signs have been implemented to inform drivers of the change. Pedestrian-level signage has also been installed at the crosswalks to educate pedestrians about the updated signals.
In addition to the new leading pedestrian intervals, Mission installed a new 30 km/h playground zone on Cedar Street, near Albert McMahon Elementary School. Playground zones are in effect from dawn until dusk, 365 days per year.
