Like many arenas across the country, the Mission Leisure Centre’s north arena is freshly sprayed every season with traditional ice paint. This paint is challenging and costly to dispose of once the season is over.

This season, however, the City of Mission is using a vinyl floor covering that is not only easier to dispose of, but also safer and more cost effective than the typical ice paint product. The vinyl covering can also be rolled up and used in subsequent seasons, which cuts down on waste.

“The catalyst for moving to this vinyl product was due to the increasing difficulty in disposing of traditional ice paint at the end of the ice season,” said Mark Brettell, Facilities Supervisor at the Mission Leisure Centre. “Environmental landfills are reluctant to take this material, and some are refusing to accept it at all. Leaving the disposal of the material to specialized sites, typically increasing the cost of disposal.”

Staff at the Mission Leisure Centre are excited and ready for the upcoming ice season. While arena users will still experience the same high-quality ice as before, the changing of paint to vinyl covering for our ice is an example of our determination to innovate and care for the environment while still providing the same superior service.
