Secondary Suites Program Information Session

  • Join us for a drop-in style information session to learn about the City of Mission’s new Secondary Suites Program on Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Best Western in the ballroom.

    In this information session, you will have an opportunity to learn about the program and ask questions to staff.

    Registering your suite ensures the City knows how many secondary suites are located in the community.

    All homeowners who currently have a secondary suite must register regardless of whether their suite was built with or without the proper permits or approvals. 

    Suite registration is easy. Registration can be completed online now or during this session. Registrations received prior to April 2, 2024 will not require inspections provided a declaration form is completed. 

    About the Program

    The City’s goal is to remove the barriers that many face in bringing their secondary suite into full compliance by making the process attainable for homeowners. 

    Homeowners registering after April 2, 2024 will be subject to suite inspections and required to bring their suite into full BC Building Code and bylaw compliance with the City.

    Once registered, there are two types of suites that will be identified on the Property Tax Notice:

    Registered Suite

    • Although known by the City, these suites have not been confirmed as meeting all City bylaws and or Building Code requirements.
    • Registration acknowledges that some suites may never be able to fully comply with Bylaw and or Building Code requirements given their existence prior to April 2, 2024.
    • This type of suite can only be obtained during the initial registration window between now and April 2, 2024. Registration submitted after April 2, 2024 will be required to be certified by the City conforming to all applicable bylaws and provincial building standards.

    Certified Suite

    • Suites that have followed the process of legalization through a building permit application. 
    • These suites conform to all provisions of the City bylaws including the requirements for off-street parking.
