Mission, BC— The Official Community Plan (OCP) Update is in its second phase of a year-long work program, and we want you to get involved.
In Phase 2, the Project Team will engage with Mission Council, Council committees, residents, business groups and others to clarify a new vision for the OCP. During this work phase the consultant has prepared new plans for discussion at different events from June 17 – 19.
Among the plans prepared are Concept Plans that will show different area where growth could occur in Mission. These plans are very general in design and will help both Mission Council, residents and others to share their comments about the best places in Mission where new growth can occur.
In addition to these plans, the consultant is preparing a set of Land Use Scenarios that provide more detailed information than the Concept Plans.
The Land Use Scenarios show areas where growth could occur, in a stylized map format, illustrating a core area, areas with different residential densities and building types, parks and protected areas, employment lands, and major road/bus transit corridors.
These maps will be presented to Mission Council at meetings on Monday, June 17th after which Council will share them with the community to seek ideas for use in preparing a draft OCP land use plan.
This is an exciting and pivotal time in the preparation of Mission’s new OCP, and your ideas are essential for the new plan that will guide city growth over the next two decades.
What We Heard in Phase 1
Recent public engagement suggests the existing vision still resonates with many residents. Over 60% of survey respondents agree or strongly agree with the direction it sets. Furthermore, generally, few respondents (17%) disagreed or strongly disagreed with the direction set out in Mission’s current vision.
However, responses from residents, including those who feel aligned with the current vision, feel that the vision itself has not been fully reflected in some decisions made since the OCP was adopted in 2018. Transportation and housing were areas highlighted in the comments as most concerning. Many respondents also felt the current vision could be improved by placing more emphasis on recreation, parks, and open spaces within the community.
