Mission, BC— In an ongoing effort to promote water conservation and ensure the sustainability of local water supplies, the City of Mission is launching a voluntary water metering program for homeowners of single detached homes. This program is designed to help residents reduce water consumption, potentially lower utility costs, and protect local watersheds.
Background
The City’s water conservation efforts have been guided by several key plans. In 2018, the Abbotsford Mission Water & Sewer Commission (AMWSC) updated the Water Master Plan, which identified the need for continued water conservation. In 2022, the AMWSC further updated the region’s Water Efficiency Plan to address the pressures from climate change and population growth, aiming to meet conservation targets outlined in the original master plan.
One of the primary objectives of the Water Efficiency Plan is the need for universal water metering across the region. The introduction of this voluntary metering program is a significant step toward achieving that goal. Water metering plays a crucial role in measuring consumption, identifying leaks, and promoting efficient water use.
Why Sign Up for a Water Meter?
- Control Your Water Costs – A family of four with moderate water use could save an estimated $230 annually on water and sewer costs based on 2025 utility rates.
- Save Water – Water metering helps households track their consumption, identify leaks, and reduce waste.
- Protect Our Water Supplies – Reducing your water use can help ensure the local watersheds support not only our needs, but the ecosystems that thrive in them, especially during summer droughts.

Each application will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to ensure the property meets the requirements for a water meter.
How to Apply

Applications can be submitted online or in person at the City Hall Finance Department (8645 Stave Lake Street) for paper applications. As spaces are limited, early application is encouraged to be one of the first 100 homeowners to secure a free water meter and its installation.
